Shoulder Pain: Don't Let It Impinge on Your Life!
Welcome to the Performance Plate Podcast! In this episode, we dive into the topic of shoulder pain and the prevalence of inflammatory conditions that can affect functional ability. Specifically, we explore subacromial impingement syndrome, the most common cause of shoulder pain, and its management strategies. We present evidence from a systematic review and meta-analysis of three randomized controlled trials that show the effectiveness of physiotherapy and subacromial corticosteroid injection (CSI) in improving pain, shoulder range of motion, and function in the short, medium, and long term. However, we also discuss that there is no evidence for the superiority of CSI over physiotherapy in the short term, except for a significant improvement in shoulder function in favor of CSI at short-term follow-up. Furthermore, we highlight that patient preference should be considered when deciding on the management strategy. We also explore the possible contributing factors to shoulder pain and impingement syndrome, and the benefits and drawbacks of each treatment option. Specifically, we discuss how physiotherapy is recommended as the low-risk option due to the lack of evidence for the long-term effects of CSI and the possible adverse effects of long-term usage. If you or someone you know is experiencing shoulder pain or subacromial impingement syndrome, this episode offers valuable insights into effective management strategies and the importance of considering patient preference in treatment decisions.
